2014 Eurovision Song Contest was quite an show.Boo´s for Russia due of the current situation in Ukraine was quite expected and fully understood especially due of the lyrics.Less show numbers, less glitter and more ballades. Lots of fuzz before the contest due of selected songs from national finals most of the cases wrong song won and now after the final some narrowminded persons are trying to create storm in waterglass. Still nothing changes the results anymore, Conchita is the real winner by winning clearly both juryvotes and televotes. And the amount of articles and mediastorm is clearly giving more credit for the song contest. For that alone I am quite pleased, BUT still I would like to see some changes in the contest as it seems clearly how there is some serious problems behind curtains.
Shall we look at 1st semifinals
Semifinal one Semifinal two
Shall we look at 1st semifinals
Semifinal one Semifinal two
By looking these results at first there is only couple of things that catches the eye.How in semifinal one jury and televoters were so united having same top5,thus in different order.
Semifinal two did show quite a lot of differences where only two countries were in common in top 5, Austria and Romania.
50-50 system causes irritations each time. Even if the two sets of votes would be counted together, it wouldn´t change the thruth that much. In semifinal one Estonia would have gone to the final and San Marino would have been left out. In semifinal two no changes what so ever. How is that possible, well look at this
SF 1 SF2
1.Netherlands 262p 1.Austria 293
2.Sweden 233p 2.Romania 219
3.Hungary 229p 3.Finland 174
4.Armenia 198 4.Poland 159
5.Ukraine 196 5.Switzerland 157
6.Iceland 121 6.Norway 150
7.Russia 120 7.Belarus 144
8.Estonia 97 8.Malta 141
9.Azerbaijan 95 9.Greece 137
10. Montenegro 92 10.Slovenia 107
11.Portugal 87 11.Macedonia 93
12.San Marino 76 12.Lithuania 79
13.Latvia 69 13.Ireland 75
14.Albania 68 14.Israel 58
15.Belgium 59 15.Georgia 48
16.Moldova 29
This year even the system would be as above nothing except Estonia receiving and San Marino loosing the final place. Only what surprises me still is how on earth Israel was seen so weak, but that is how the current votingsystem provides, surprises.
Still so many are more than furious. Could there be alternative solutions?
CHANGE THE WAY semi+finalvoting
A)Jurygroups are only giving their votes in semifinals and by allowing voting from every participating country also in semifinal stage would bring EBU more income to cover the costs / lowering the participating fees perhaps.
B) Changing the votingsystem :Jurygroup gives points from 1-XX amount of participating nations = every nation will get points. Same system could be used also in televoting IF there is votes arriving for each song in all the nations.I suppose there is the case anyway. Both set of votes are represented as is, without mixing 50-50. More drama for sure and contest might get an extra interest.
C) Bringing a new voting group to the picture, which is the some (socialmedia) group for the international voters, which could bring also an another interest matter for the contest itself. I am sure this could be easily created and tested.
D) announcing the amount of televotes, just like in any other contest.
E) adding the charity function just like in use in Swedish Melodifestivalen. Great way to give back to the world and the decision is by the televoter whether to donate or not. Try it!
FINAL
And to do the same in final edition and showing whether it would change a thing having this system instead.
1. Austria 535 (+-0)
2.Netherlands 425 (+-0)
3.Sweden 391 (+-0)
4.Armenia 318 (+-0)
5.Hungary 236 (+-0)
6.Russia 202 (+1)
7.Ukraine 190 (-1)
8.Poland 185 (+6)
9.Romania 154 (+3)
10.Finland 153 (+1)
11.Switzerland 141 (+2)
12.Norway 141 (-4)
13.Malta 136 (+10)
14.Azerbaijan 134 (+8)
15.Denmark 128 (-6)
16.Spain 124 (-6))
17.Belarus 106 (-1)
18.Iceland 105 (-3)
19.Greece 92 (+1)
20.Germany 92 (-2)
21.Montenegro 81 (-2)
22.UK 81 (-5)
23.Italy 69 (-2)
24.Slovenia 36 (+1)
25.San Marino 34 (-1)
26. France 6 (+-0)
If this system would have been in use the top 5 is similar and so is the holder of last place. In between some huge changes in placings where Poland,Azerbaijan and Malta would had gained and Denmark, Spain and UK lost the most. Would this be better? Perhaps, what do you think?
Few last words of this years contest
Each year lots of speculations happen after the semifinals and final about the fair game. This system brings clearly in this year 36 unhappy nations with artists and one extremely happy nation and artist. Winner usually takes it all. Still I would with great pleasure see the changes in voting system which would for sure put an end to the annual storms in waterglasses.
An another matter is how to make it easier for each nation to participate by lowering the participation fee. Lately the contest has turned an showcase for entertainment business and new technology etc. comes always with the pricetag. Question is should the importance be in music instead? The stage from this years could be used again next year without any problem and without any change as the new technology provides so many ways how to use that type of stage and this year we saw only so little what could have been done with it. Many nations didn´t have the know-how. C´est la vie.
Contest is over,we have a winner. Now for the 3rd year in a row I am personally very happy as the own biggest favourite won. Sure there is many other favourites whom didn´t do well such as Moldova,France, Estonia and Israel, but that is how it goes in eurovision. And that´s part of how all of us return in front of television each year despite how we decide, that this was now the last time. It never will be... old dog can´t learn new tricks and why should it either :)
Vienna 2015?
